Do not post personal information, whether it belongs to you or someone else. Reddit automatically removes comments with URL shorteners (bit.ly etc), it's not us. I was hoping that by changing providers my speed fluctuations would stabilize.
I'm guessing you live in an apartment or condo and have a Flets Mansion connection - if that's the case, your issue isn't the provider as much as it is the connection being shared throughout your building. Surprisingly, your best option in that case may be to get an ADSL line, as they aren't shared. If you live geographically close to an NTT branch exchange, the speeds are actually very good. Also - Softbank is never the answer.
The line itself is owned by NTT. You have a provider who gives you service over that line. It's a bit different than in the U.S., for example. One company owns the infrastructure (NTT usually) and one owns the Internet Service (Previous I was using OCN, now switched to Softbank BB, some people have Yahoo). The easiest way will be to call your provider and ask about your plan type.
I know I have a dedicated line because there was no Internet service available already and I had someone come to set up the modem and everything. If you have a modem in your room then it's probably dedicated. Shared would be multiple people going through the same modem, I think (not quite sure where the shared part happens). This is very interesting information. I stand corrected on just about everything, but the difference I had in mind was along the lines of sharing one fiber with multiple apartments I guess would be the correct terminology (i.e. Apartment building LAN) vs no apartment building LAN and you are the only one who sees the end of that fiber.
I made no assumptions about further up the line but thanks for this information. The nerdy side of me.ok.the only side of me is overjoyed at all this technical info. Are there any tricks you can use to find out more about your own connection? Or at least some correlation? For example, if I run a traceroute will I see certain server names differ between the two?
I am quite satisfied with my network connection. The main measure of throughput I use is Steam and it peaks at around 20 MB/sec (bytes, not bits) so this would be out of pure curiosity. I would probably gladly pick your brain about everything but I'll try to avoid hijacking this topic. 80% of the time, it's the connection between you and the concentrator (neighborhood node). After that, is when the individual networks start kicking in. Their own bandwidth capabilities, network interconnects, routing, etc, etc. Really 'who has the best network' comes down to 'what do you use it for'.
For me I need a fast and big connection going back to my lab in the States. I can grab VM's and push them back quickly.
Softbank and OCN both do this for me just fine. I actually start eating up CPU's on my router via the VPN encryption before I come close to maxing out my GigE.
Ntt hayabusa optic fiber here. Had problems with the NTT+OCN combo. It would be 200MB/s during the day and after 6pm it would drop to less than 1MB/s. Very annoying. I called NTT and complained. They said their structural installations wasn't enough for the traffic at night.
And they asked me to kindly wait until they complete the installation of more cables 1 month later. So for one month I only played Techies on Dota 2 - ruining everyone's games. After 1 month it didn't change nothing, so I fixed it by changing from OCN to a less known provider and now I get stable 500MB/s download to the nearest server with a 100% uptime so far since February. Try to go for less known providers and services. You'll be surprised how good they are since their services aren't congested like the big ones, like DoCoMo, Softbank and au.
